Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 511!

Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 511's web site. Boy Scout Troop 511 in Austin TX is sponsored by St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, and was founded in 1972. Over the years, we have had more than 170 young men become Eagle Scouts. We have a lovely outdoor program, including about 10 outdoor outings a year, summer camp and a high adventure trip for older Scouts.

If you're interested in our troop, we encourage you to come visit us at one of our meetings! We meet every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Huffman Hall on the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church campus. We love to have guests any time. Some meetings are more interesting for visitors to come to, so feel free to contact us if you're wondering which meeting would be best for you to come and check out Troop 511.

Training for Adults - Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM) Class Coming Up

Posted on Apr 20 2026 - 3:44pm
Troop 511 has a great program because we have so many involved adults. Have you ever thought about becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster? Assistant Scoutmasters support our Scout leaders at meetings. They work with Scouts who want to get rank requirement signoffs. They help make the 511 parents (aka, the Rocking Chair patrol) a great bunch of people to camp with, and a great resource for the Scouts in theior outdoor adventures. Getting trained as an ASM is a great way to learn a lot more about the Scouting program and how to support the troop.  To become trained as an ASM, you compllete a set of required online courses and take an in-person class. Now is a great time to tackle this, as our council is offering the in-person class at Lost Pines in Bastrop, the Friday night of May 15 (6PM) through the Saturday night of May 16 (8PM). The online courses are free. The cost of the in-person class is $65, and the troop will reimburse you (save the receipt).

Part 1: Online Courses: To get started now, take the online courses in the Training Center on My.Scouting: Catalog > Scouts BSA Learning Plans - Select your Positions > Scouts BSA - Scoutmaster Position Specific Training. Here's a link that should take you to the "Select Your Positions: page after you log in: https://training.scouting.org/programs/2
Just taking these online courses is super helpful for the troop. One of them is the Hazardous Weather course, and we always need adults who are current on that training.

Part 2: In-person Class: There are 3 upcoming opportunities to take this 2-day class. In this session, you get a practical introduction to the patrol method of a Scout-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills your Scout learns. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.

Reminder: Swim Check Meeting Apr 21 - Meet at Balcones Woods Pool at 7 PM

Posted on Apr 16 2026 - 10:29pm

Please join us on Tuesday April 21 at 7 PM (usual meeting time) for our 2026 Swim Check meeting! We will meet at Balcones Woods Pool (near Duval and 183) and will have a certified lifeguard to run the swim check. Any Scout who or adult who may want to attend summer or winter camp or any aquatic activity like boating this year, should attend this meeting if at all possible. Based on the swim check, participating Scouts and adults are classed as Learner, Beginner, or Swimmer, which is required at summer and winter camp. Older Scouts who have done some of these, use this chance to demonstrate water rescue methods for the Second Class 5c signoff!

Adults, Take "Safe Swim Defense" to Learn More About Aquatic Activities in Scouting

Posted on Apr 16 2026 - 10:29pm

Adults, you can learn more and help us run aquatic activities safely by taking "Safe Swim Defense!" It's a 25-minute course on MyScouting.org. Anytime the troop engages in a swimming activity, the troop needs adults familiar with Scouting guidelines for managing swimming safely. Adult leaders supervising a swimming activity must have completed the training within the previous two years. All swimming activities in Scouting are required to follow the eight basic principles known collectively as the Safe Swim Defense plan:

Getting ready to move to the next rank in Scouts? See the Scout Spirit Guide and the Board of Review Guide

Posted on Apr 16 2026 - 10:28pm

Are you ready to move to the next rank in Scouts? You can get there quickly if you work to get a signoff or two at each meeting. Choose one and review the material in the Scout Book (each rank requirement has page numbers to point you at information in the Scout Book to help). Bring your book and a pen, and come talk to any Assistant Scoutmaster at the meeting to work on a signoff! If you are getting close to completing a rank, here are two troop resources that may be helpful:
