Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 511!

Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 511's web site. Boy Scout Troop 511 in Austin TX is sponsored by St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, and was founded in 1972. Over the years, we have had more than 170 young men become Eagle Scouts. We have a lovely outdoor program, including about 10 outdoor outings a year, summer camp and a high adventure trip for older Scouts.

If you're interested in our troop, we encourage you to come visit us at one of our meetings! We meet every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Huffman Hall on the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church campus. We love to have guests any time. Some meetings are more interesting for visitors to come to, so feel free to contact us if you're wondering which meeting would be best for you to come and check out Troop 511.

We would love to have more adults trained to lead aquatic activities for Troop 511! A great opportunity to help us build this skill set in our committee is a weekend coming up at the end of August. This comes along rarely, so we are talking about it now! The Longhorn Council Aquatics Committee invites you to join them for a fun weekend of aquatic training. The dates are Friday Aug 28 through Sunday August 30. Training starts at 8pm Friday night and will conclude Sunday no later then 5pm. The location is Worth Ranch, west of Fort Worth, about 3 1/4 hours away. This weekend event offers two trainings in one! Training is for Scouts/Scouters ages 15+. The cost is $50 per person, which includes printed learning resources, patch, and meals.

Scouts Read Sacred Texts Worldwide - Ways to Participate (including with St Matt's) the Week of May 5

Posted on Apr 29 2026 - 5:43pm

Scouts Read Sacred Texts Worldwide is an annual event to encourage youth to read their sacred texts in conjunction with the U.S. National Day of Prayer. If any Scouts are interested, this could be something people participate in individually or as a group. Also, we got a call from St Matt's asking if any Scouts are interested in participating in some way. If you are interested in this event and willing to coordinate with St Matt's, talk to Ms. Juday and she can help put you in touch. Scouts Read Sacred Texts Worldwide  aligns with the values, principles, and spiritual aims of Scouting.  Participation satisfies the Scout Spirit requirement to "Tell how you have done your duty to God.” This event supports the Scout Oath commitment to duty to God; encourages personal reflection consistent with BSA principles; respects each Scout’s family and faith tradition; and may be completed individually, with family, or as a unit activity. Learn more and register at https://www.scoutsreadsacredtextsworldwide.org/ .

Parent Wanted: Gather Popcorn Info (and Have Fun!) at Council Kickoff Fair on Saturday!

Posted on Apr 29 2026 - 5:42pm

It's that time! We are looking for a parent to help manage our fall Popcorn Sale. You'd be a partner to Katherine Gross, who managed last year's sale. Even if you are just thinking about it, could you consider gathering information for us at the Summer/Popcorn Kickoff this Saturday, May 2 (11AM - 2PM) at Fickett Center? The Kickoff Fair this Saturday is the official launch of the 2026 sale, and the ONLY place to see the reveal of our mystery 2026 Popcorn Theme. It's also a big party this year, with a bunch of activities that Scouts and siblings could enjoy -- Reptile booths! Texas Space Grant! Dino poop/rock breaking! Pinewood derby! Face paint! Booth signs! Frozen soda! Games!  Also, you can meet Peach, a 50-year old African spurred tortoise! Popcorn is a smaller thing than in Cubs, but it is still important. Scouts, especially younger Scouts, use the popcorn sale to help cover costs of things like summer camp and Philmont (Troop 511 "Scout Bux"). This is also one of the 2 ways that we financially support the Council, which includes Lost Pines Scout Ranch (where we are going for Summer Camp) and Fickett Center (including the Scout Shop and classroom space).  REGISTER HERE for the Saturday Kickoff Fair!  If you cannot go to the Fair but want to work on popcorn this year, let Ms Juday know (jjuday@gmail.com)!

Training for Adults - Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM) Class Coming Up in May

Posted on Apr 22 2026 - 1:40pm
Troop 511 has a great program because we have so many involved adults. Have you ever thought about becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster? Assistant Scoutmasters support our Scout leaders at meetings. They work with Scouts who want to get rank requirement signoffs. They help make the 511 parents (aka, the Rocking Chair patrol) a great bunch of people to camp with, and a great resource for the Scouts in their outdoor adventures. Getting trained as an ASM is a great way to learn a lot more about the Scouting program and how to support the troop.  To become trained as an ASM, you complete a set of required online courses and take an in-person class. Now is a great time to tackle this, as our council is offering the in-person class at Lost Pines in Bastrop, the Friday night of May 15 (6PM) through the Saturday night of May 16 (8PM). The in-person class iis scheduled for just one session this spring, so you would need to wait for the fall unless oyu plan to take it at summer or wintger camp. The cost of the in-person class is $65, and the troop will reimburse you (save the receipt). The online courses are free.

Part 1: Online Courses: To get started now, take the online courses in the Training Center on My.Scouting: Catalog > Scouts BSA Learning Plans - Select your Positions > Scouts BSA - Scoutmaster Position Specific Training. Here's a link that should take you to the "Select Your Positions: page after you log in: https://training.scouting.org/programs/2
Just taking these online courses is super helpful for the troop. One of them is the Hazardous Weather course, and we always need adults who are current on that training.

Part 2: In-person Class: There are 3 upcoming opportunities to take this 2-day class. In this session, you get a practical introduction to the patrol method of a Scout-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills your Scout learns. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.
